Solar Controllers are basically temperature differential thermostats, but to effect efficient harvesting of free solar energy have to perform many more tasks. In brief, sensors measure the temperature of the fluid in the solar collector, and compare against the temperature of the water in the HWS cylinder (store). Heat transfers from hot to cold, so as soon as the temperature of fluid becomes higher in the collector, the pump will bring that heat down to the cylinder and transfer it into the store. This is its most simplistic definition of operation.
Altecnic BS solar controller for standard solar thermal systems provide a clear operating concept and is complete with illuminated digital display and system switching and monitoring functions. The controller offers options for 2 types of system, solar heat only (arrangement 1), or solar heat + additional/alternative heat source (arrangement 2), by simply programming the requirement.
Single Store applications, Single/bank of orientation panels.
Two relay connection points allow for the connection of the solar pump in arrangement 1 (solar heat only), and the addition of the additional circulating pump/ boiler in arrangement 2.
Connections for up to 4 temperature sensors; shown on the display as:
- COL - collector temperature display (in arrangement 1, solar heat only)
- TST - cylinder/store temperature (changes to TSTL when in arrangement 2, to
Signify L for 'lower coil' in the cylinder/store)
- S3 - third temperature probe (optional), shows temperature in the upper part of the cylinder, i.e. the part heated by the additional heat source, or boiler)
- S4 - a fourth temperature probe added, for heat gain quantity measurement
Other features, protected from tampering as hidden parameters. The symbols are shown here as feature on the digital display.
- hP - number of hours the solar pump has run since installation. A guide for Maintenance and servicing
- DT O - optional feature to allow the installer to reset the switch on temperature differential (up to 10C) to compensate for the pump 'hunting' in drain Back systems.
- DT F - Switch Off temperature differential adjustment
- S MX - adjustment for maximum cylinder/store temperature. Factory set to 60C, This could be used to increase heat storage to temperatures up to 85C (measured on temperature probe TST) NOTE-use in conjunction with an Anti-scald thermostatic Solar Mixing Valve!
- EM - emergency shutdown function set at 140C in collector) for system protection
- OCX - system cooling function
- CMX - Collector maximum temperature, system factory set at 120C
- OCN - Minimum collector function (factory setting OFF)
- OREC - Re-cooling function (factory setting OFF). This will keep the solar pump running even if the store temperature max has been reached to prevent system stagnation.
- OTC - tube collector function (factory setting OFF). Used to move fluid out of the collector manifold so the temperature sensor can pick up temperature Rise. If the temperature rises by 2C (egg, first thing in the morning) the pump is Switched on for 30 sec).
- AHO - For back-up heating or 'heat dumping' functions. Factory setting 40C. Acts on SWITCH ON Information given by a third temperature sensor, and switches via relay 2.
- AHO - For back-up heating or 'heat dumping' functions. Factory setting 40C. Acts on SWITCH OFF Information given by a third temperature sensor, and switches via relay 2.
Also note:
