Great things come in small HIU packages
A range of sleek, small and smart heat interface units (HIU) has been launched by Altecnic to help architects and consultants meet the rigorous demands of Building Regulation Part L.
By drawing on the latest European technology, the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of accredited plumbing equipment, has developed highly efficient, compact units which self-regulate energy consumption and help to actively reduce the carbon footprint of buildings.
Inside Altecnic’s foam insulated HIU, traditional mechanical control valves have been replaced with high-tech electronic valves that quickly react to changes in pressure and continually monitor pipework, plate and output temperatures.
Most traditional HIUs have a constant primary flow through the domestic exchanger 24 hours a day, thereby wasting energy. Altecnic’s electronic control valves allows flow to warm the exchanger, but the valve closes once the unit is warm, only re-opening as required to keep the exchanger temperature above a pre-set point. This ensures the absolute minimum of wasted energy but still allows for instant delivery of domestic hot water.
The unit can also deliver specific secondary heating temperatures for radiators or under-floor heating and can also be set to keep a specific differential temperature (Delta T). As the heating return temperature starts to increase, the HIU will automatically lower the heating output temperature to suit the lower energy requirement, maintaining the Delta T and saving even more energy.
The HIU range also include both direct and indirect models that have a secondary heating pump which include a differential pressure switch and pump bypass, removing the need for open radiators or for the contractor to install his own bypass. Should all the radiator TRV’s close down, the pump bypass will automatically open, thereby protecting the pump from pumping against a closed system. This results in a more efficient system and a faster and easier installation.
Neil Parry, Altecnic’s specifications manager commented: “For many years there has been very little development in HIU design with the majority of products changing little over the last 10 years and technical innovation has stagnated. As market leaders we recognised the impact of building regulation’s Part L and the importance of saving energy and carbon. We’ve therefore significantly invested in new technology and product development to provide industry professionals with a device that delivers exceptional energy savings that help to meet the current stringent building regulations. We’ve also developed the product with architects, installers and end-users in mind, making our HIU lightweight, compact and low maintenance, saving installation time and cost, making the HIU suitable for any installation. ”
